Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Finding Space for Healing, Growth, and Liberation

At Velvet & Vine, we know healing isn’t about fixing what’s “wrong.” It’s about making space for the truth of who you are—your body, your story, and your future. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is one of the ways we help queer, trans, and neurodivergent people move through pain, release shame, and step into lives filled with meaning.

This approach isn’t about forcing positivity. Instead, it’s about honoring what hurts, learning skills to stay grounded, and choosing actions that align with your deepest values. In short: it’s about making space for you.

What Is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based type of cognitive behavioral therapy. It’s built on six core processes:

  1. Acceptance – allowing feelings and experiences to exist without judgment.

  2. Cognitive Defusion – learning to see thoughts as thoughts, not absolute truths.

  3. Contact with the Present Moment – practicing mindfulness to anchor yourself.

  4. Self-as-Context – cultivating a sense of self that is flexible, expansive, and resilient.

  5. Values – identifying what matters most to you.

  6. Committed Action – taking steps toward those values, even when life feels overwhelming.

You can read more about ACT’s science from the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science.

Unlike approaches that only try to change your thoughts, ACT helps you live with them in a different way. It doesn’t erase pain—but it teaches you to carry it with more freedom, instead of letting it control your choices.

Why We Use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

At Velvet & Vine, our therapists use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy because it blends science with compassion. It honors the reality that life brings suffering, and it also trusts that you can create meaning even in the presence of pain.

ACT is especially supportive for queer and trans people, for neurodivergent communities, and for anyone navigating trauma. Many of us have been told our experiences are “too much.” ACT flips that script.

Trauma-Informed and Queer Liberatory

Traditional therapy models sometimes pathologize queer, trans, or neurodivergent lives. They frame difference as dysfunction. We reject that lens.

In our practice, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is always trauma-informed and liberatory:

The Six Core Processes in Action

To give you a clearer picture, here’s how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy looks in practice:

  1. Acceptance – Letting feelings exist without constant fighting.

  2. Cognitive Defusion – Seeing thoughts as passing events, not facts.

  3. Contact with the Present Moment – Grounding in your body and surroundings.

  4. Self-as-Context – Cultivating a sense of self beyond trauma or identity labels.

  5. Values – Identifying what gives life meaning.

  6. Committed Action – Taking steps aligned with those values.
