Our Story

Trauma-Informed Care for Queer, Trans, and Neurodivergent Lives

A woman with open arms enjoying freedom in a foggy green landscape.

At Velvet & Vine, we believe healing isn’t about fixing what’s broken — it’s about tending to what’s still growing.

We offer therapy, somatic care, and mental health support rooted in radical compassion, evidence-based practice, and a deep understanding of what it means to live at the margins. Our approach centers queer, trans, nonbinary, neurodivergent, and trauma-impacted communities because we are part of those communities. We know firsthand that healing isn’t linear, and safety isn’t one-size-fits-all.

This is not just therapy. It’s reclamation work. It’s learning to come home to yourself — in every breath, every boundary, every tender choice to stay.

Why Velvet? A Queer-Coded Symbol

In queer history, velvet has never just been fabric — it’s been a symbol of softness, sensuality, and resistance. It evokes images of underground salons, drag stages, tender queerness, and the refusal to conform to rigid binaries.

🌿 Crushed velvet jackets in 80s gender nonconformity.

🌿 Softness worn as armor in queer nightlife, drag performance, and trans femme resilience.

Velvet is texture and tactility. It’s luxury claimed by those who were denied it. It’s softness that knows exactly what it’s doing.

When we chose Velvet & Vine, we chose a name that acknowledges the coded languages of queer survival and celebration. Velvet signals our alignment with radical softness as a form of defiance: the right to be gentle in a world that punishes difference, the right to heal without apology.

In queer and trans communities, softness isn’t weakness — it’s a sacred, subversive act.

Why Vine? Growth, Reclamation, and Queer Liberation

A vine doesn’t ask for permission to grow — it finds a way.

Vines wind through cracks, reclaim abandoned spaces, and transform ruins into green. They don’t follow straight lines or neat patterns. They twist, reach, adapt, and root wherever life is possible.

For queer, trans, and neurodivergent folks, growth rarely happens in the places we were told it would. We learn to expand in unexpected directions, to build chosen family, to create joy in places where systems failed us. We learn to climb toward light even when the path is nonlinear.

Vine is a symbol of that kind of growth: unruly, resilient, and liberatory.

  • It’s about breaking the mold, not fitting into it.

  • It’s about rooting in community, not isolation.

  • It’s about claiming space softly, persistently, and without apology.

In a world that tries to prune us back, the vine says: keep growing anyway.

At Velvet & Vine, this is our promise: to support growth that defies oppression, honors difference, and makes room for every version of becoming.

Why Unfurl. Untangle. Thrive.?

Healing isn’t a straight line. It’s a process. Cyclical, nonlinear, and deeply personal.

At Velvet & Vine, our tagline — Unfurl. Untangle. Thrive. — reflects that journey in three intentional stages:

Unfurl.

To unfurl is to begin again. It’s the soft, radical act of opening — gently, slowly, on your terms. Like a leaf uncurling toward the sun, unfurling isn’t forced. It’s consent-driven growth. It’s choosing to take up space, even when the world taught you to stay small.

For queer, trans, and neurodivergent folks, unfurling often means shedding the layers of masking, survival mode, and self-erasure we’ve had to carry. It’s the first breath after holding yourself tight for too long.

Untangle.

Untangling is about looking inward with compassion. It’s the process of separating your truth from what the world projected onto you — unraveling internalized shame, trauma narratives, gender expectations, and cultural scripts that don’t belong to you.

We don’t believe in “fixing” yourself. We believe in liberating yourself from the knots you didn’t tie.

In therapy, this means creating space to name, hold, and gently loosen the tangled places in your nervous system, relationships, and sense of self without rushing, without judgment.

Thrive.

To thrive is not just to survive another day. It’s to reclaim joy, pleasure, connection, and possibility, even in a world that isn’t always safe.

Thriving looks different for everyone. For some, it’s setting boundaries. For others, it’s dancing without apology, finding chosen family, or learning to rest. Whatever it looks like for you, we believe thriving is your birthright — not something you have to earn.

At Velvet & Vine, we walk with you through the whole process: Unfurl. Untangle. Thrive. Again and again, as many times as you need.
